Oliver Stoneridge loves order and plans, especially when they’re laid out on a perfectly formatted spreadsheet. But when his girlfriend, Violet, dumps him, Oliver’s strategy for the future slips away. Desperate to win her back, he begs Taryn, his archenemy and Violet’s beauty queen roommate, for help. Taryn’s gorgeous, thinks he’s a nerd, and wouldn’t know a plan from a prom dress, but Oliver soon finds himself tangled in her web of sexy. Suddenly, Ollie’s falling for Taryn and losing track of everything he thought he wanted.

Taryn Markos knows that agreeing to help Ollie win back her best friend is a dumb idea. Not only because he’s all wrong for Violet but because the more time she spends with him, the more confused she gets. Who knew Nerdilicious himself could challenge her with a single look, even from underneath those unruly eyebrows in dire need of a tweeze? How could she have known that he would accept her and defend her when she needed it the most? Taryn’s hated Oliver for three years. Why does the sight of him now make her come alive?

As things heat up between the frenemies, sparks begin to fly. But Ollie and Taryn know their love-hate flirtationship has to stop—before someone ends up with a broken heart.

Chapter 6.5
(Ollie is driving Taryn from campus to the Miss Lovely America competition in Philadelphia).

Oliver

I moved the car into the left lane of the New Jersey Turnpike as I glanced at Taryn in my passenger seat. Like I had told her before we left for Philly, it was no shock to me that she’s a beauty queen. To say the woman is beautiful is not a controversial statement by any definition of the terms. But at that moment in my car, on the way to the Miss Lovely America pageant where she’d represent the Garden State, she looked absolutely ridiculous.

She wore a long, white, button down shirt, rolled up at the sleeves, and a pair of tight exercise shorts. Her legs went on forever and disappeared under my glove compartment. I’d spray tanned her a few hours ago, outside of her apartment in the middle of the damn night, and it only made her legs more appealing. Now, she was halfway done with putting these crazy ass hot rollers in her hair. Half of her long blonde hair was up in the curlers, and the other half lay straight down her back.

When I started laughing, she looked to me from the passenger seat. “What’s so funny?”

I pressed my lips together to keep my chuckling to myself. Taryn was a nervous wreck about the competition—she’d only found out a few hours ago that she, as the runner up, would have to compete for the national title the next day, since Miss Lovely New Jersey had to drop out.

“Nothing,” I answered, focusing on getting us to Philadelphia by six a.m. Time would be tight, but I figured if I drove at least seventy-two the entire ninety-one miles, we’d make it in time.

She looked at herself in the mirror on the visor and rolled another roller onto her head. Then she started laughing. “Look at me.” She spun to face me, and the rollers swooped around and hit her in the face.

That only made me laugh harder. “I’m sorry,” I said. “I shouldn’t laugh. It’s just… your hair with those things reminds me of Medusa.”

Reaching across the console, she gave me a good shove. “Shut up.”

“Or Mike Wazowski on Monsters, Inc. You know, his girlfriend with the snakes for hair.” I took my hand off the wheel to wiggle my fingers near my head. “Celia?”

Taryn turned back to the mirror. “Oh my god, you’re right. How am I going to do this, Ollie? I’m a mess. I’m a cartoon. I’m Celia.”

Ut-oh. From the way her voice shook, I thought she would start crying. I hadn’t meant to upset her. “No, no, no,” I mutter, reaching out to rub her shoulder. “I’m joking. You’ll be great. I promise.”

When Taryn had found out about the pageant, and told me that she needed my help, of course I offered to do whatever I could. I mean, she was my girlfriend’s—well, ex-girlfriend’s—roommate. Anyone would help out a friend in distress, right? Even if that friend was super cute and… damn… those legs were unnaturally long.

“Maybe we should turn around. I’m going to make a complete fool of myself. I don’t know the songs, I don’t know my marks, I have no idea if I can even handle choreography. Let them sue me. Your parents can get me out of it, right?”

My parents were super lawyers at a super firm in New York City. They could likely get anyone out of anything. But I didn’t want Taryn to give up.

“Listen,” I told her, as I switched lanes, “if there’s one thing I’ve learned about you while you teach me how to win Violet back, it’s that you’re tenacious.”

“Tenacious? Me?” Her voice rose a few octaves.

Obviously, she didn’t believe it. “You told me at dinner that you were left alone a lot while your parents worked. You taught yourself how to survive. How to use chopsticks. How to beat Donkey Kong. You even taught yourself Italian.”

I glanced at Taryn, her green eyes watering with tears of her insecurities.

“Don’t you tell me that you can’t do this, because I’m one-hundred percent certain that you can.” I placed my right arm on the console, palm up and fingers spread. “Give me your hand.”

With a huff, she weaved her fingers between mine. I gripped her hand and lifted them. Hers felt strong, warm. So smooth. “Team Olivyn for the win,” I cheered, and then mimicked the hiss of a crowd.

She chanted “Hashtag Team Olivyn” a few times, then settle our hands back on the console. “Winning, in this case, is getting through it.”

I knew she’d do more than get through it. There was no doubt in my mind that she could pull off a top ten finish. But to placate her nerves, I went along. “Isn’t that always a form of winning? Getting through it?”

While squeezing my fingers, she let out a sigh. It was kind of cool that she was still holding my hand. “You can say the same for Violet and your breakup. Getting through it is all you have to do.”

I didn’t want to think about getting through it or about getting over Violet, no matter how entranced I’d been by her roommate recently. Vi and I had a history. We had plans. We were supposed to be together. “I don’t know if I’m ready to get through it, Tar.”

“Understood. Maybe someday you’ll accept it.” She took her hand out of mine, and fiddled with the rollers again.

After checking my speed, I moved to the right lane. “We’re almost at our exit. Right on time.” I peeked at her, catching her grin.

“You know what, Nerdilicious?” she asked. “I know you and I have had some rough times—”

“You hated me.” She thought I was a nerd and cramping Vi’s style. I thought she was a slacker.

“I didn’t hate you. I didn’t think you were right for Vi, that’s all.”

“Fair. And I didn’t think you were right for her best friend either.”

She huffed out a quick breath. “I’m not going to argue with you about that. I just wanted to say that I maybe can see a little bit of what Violet sees, or saw, in you. You’re not all terrible.”

Her words twisted my insides. “That’s the nicest thing you’ve ever said to me.” I loved Violet, I did. Yet I couldn’t help but feel something for the woman sitting next to me. She was magnetic or something. Intriguing.

“Really?” she asked. “Then I take it back.”

“Ha, ha,” I fake laughed. “You owe me some nice words after dragging my ass to Philadelphia for a six a.m. call. I must have been an idiot to agree to this.” I was teasing, of course, but seeing her smile made me happy.

“I won’t argue that you’re an idiot, but I will say, I appreciate your help so much. Not just the ride… everything.”

“It’s my pleasure, Bella.” Why did she have to be so nice? Life was easier when she was mean to me. Focus, Oliver. “Now, let’s get you to the pageant before they start without you and New Jersey is forever shamed.”

To enter, you need to know that my lucky book number, 1.

Add up all the lucky numbers of the authors and you’ll have the secret code to enter for the grand prize!
